Sustainable Prefab Graham Residence Posted: 23 Jun 2011 07:05 PM PDT A sustainable prefab house was design by O2 Architecture, a green architectural firm from Palm Springs, California. The house is a project of Blue Sky Homes, a Palm Springs-based prefab builder, located in Yucca Valley outside of Palm Springs, and will be used as an desert escape destination on winter. This is a galvanized steel home with some sustainable building materials involved.
This prefab house was started to be built at February 2011, and finished at May. It is a successor of the same prototype home in the same location, which is also has several sustainable features. The eco construction evolves galvanized, light-gauge steel materials which are from 70% recycled materials, and allow this home to be fully recycled. Some energy-efficient elements are also included to achieve its sustainability. Environment protection was also an important consideration on construction process, where giant boulders and ancient junipers in the site were not disturbed. The basic principle of this design is to make a light-gauge, high-tensile house, with minimal, efficient environmental footprint and maintenance. The sustainable house uses STEPs (steel thermally efficient panels) for the exterior, made with expanded polystyrene with an extra layer of batt insulation (a total of R28), insulation-wrapped roof joists, and an insulated underside (R19). By these materials, good insulation can be achieved, to provide temperature protection and control for the entire house. The exterior is then finished by HardieBoard and corrugated sheet metal. The roof uses with standing-seam metal. As environmental protection is a consideration, this eco construction was built on independent concrete footings. Some parts are prefabricated off site and then delivered and assembled. This can minimize impact and speeds up construction time. This 1,225 sq ft sustainable design is completed with an open kitchen, living and dining area, Two bedrooms with a shared bathroom are provided. A large steel deck provides space for outdoor activities. With steel materials, minimal maintenance can be achieved as there will be no worries of termites, mould or dry rot, also scraping and painting. The Blue Sky Homes’ technology on provide a solution of using light-gauge, high-tensile galvanized steel on construction, which provides faster process and low maintenance, with affordable cost. It also provides sustainable construction for the house. |
