The Eco Construction of NEXTHouse by David Vandervort Architecs Posted: 02 Jun 2011 10:56 PM PDT NEXTHouse is created by David Vandervort Architects, built by Paulsen Construction in Seattle, as a fusion of northwest modern tradition and environmentally friendly house design. It is an implementation of green architecture and modern design in “for sale” house. NEXTHouse takes 5,500 sq ft area in city corner, facing to the south. The sustainable building itself is 2,700 sq ft, with unique construction arrangement to optimize the views, natural lighting, and providing a lush microclimate of northwest appropriate landscaping. The structure also accommodates the need of formal and private areas, including the outdoor spaces. The green building house was built to replace an old existing house which was deconstructed. The materials, such as framings, foundation, sidings, etc were reused or recycled to be used for this eco construction. The wastes from the construction processes were recycled on site. To achieve maximal sustainability, this sustainable house is fulled with a lot of green products and technologies. To achieve good energy conservation, insulation materials are chosen carefully, including the use of spray polyurethane foam insulation. Some supports, such a high efficiency / low emissions gas condensing boiler for the radiant floor system, are also provided for this subject. To generate renewable energy, roof mounted 1 kW solar cells are provided. This green home design also include the eco-roof system, which also acts as  storm-water collector. The use of clerestory windows provide optimal daylighting. This house is also completed with PEX plumbing piping. Another materials involved are chosen from sustainable materials, which are usually from Recycled, renewable or reclaimed materials, such as FSC certified material for framing, flooring, etc, fly-ash concrete, re-used materials from the existing residence, Ipe wood decking, countertops made from post-consumer waste products, linoleum flooring and natural wool carpets. To maintain indoor air quality, this eco friendly home is completed with good ventilation system, such as the use of air-to-air heat exchange ventilation system with HEPA filter, and stack ventilation which allow healthy air movement through the house. The finishing materials are also chosen from low-voc, formaldehyde free materials. This sustainable house design is a good model where an in-city house can have compact, efficient and eco design. With reasonable cost, this house should be a good example for further residence design. ref
