Nove, Environment Friendly Homes in California Posted: 08 Feb 2011 06:45 PM PST Nove is an Italian words, means “nine”. It is also the name of nine-unit environment friendly homes in California, designed by Handel Architects. This project received LEED Platinum certification as it provides sustainability, besides its luxurious design.
This sustainable project is located at a crossroad of Mission District, San Fransisco’s most desirable neighborhoods. It has very strategic location, with several easy accesses to some important places, such as some shops, gourmet markets, boutiques, and several incredible restaurants. With all of these features, eight of nine houses of this project have been already sold. The project involved 3 adjacent lots, consist of 3 units for each lot (total 9 units), two units closest to Guerrero Street, and another on Ames Street. The green buildings are completed with 2-4 bedrooms, outdoor spaces, luxurious spa, Euro-style chef’s kitchen and some other luxurious appliances. They also has expansive windows, some of them have downtown views. Green home design concepts were applied for this project. Energy efficiency becomes an important aspect and should be involved, by using of several environmentally friendly products and energy efficient appliances. Double glazed thermally broken windows and doors are used to optimize the temperature control inside the unit, beside the insulation. The using of Energy Star appliances is also important. The unit is also completed with in-floor radiant flooring, powered by renewable energy from solar panels in the rooftop that provide hot water. This system, combined with high efficiency boiler, can reduce the cost of hot water and space heating for approximately 63%. Low-flow faucets and toilets are also used to minimize the use of water. The sustainable home design was also involved low VOC materials and local sustainable materials. Some materials may increase the feel of luxurious, such as the use of white oak flooring, spa tubs, etc. The exterior of this sustainable building was design with the combination of ipe, aluminum, steel, stucco, and HardiePlank. Between two lots, there are green outdoor area to facilitate outdoor activities. The use of low water and drought tolerant landscaping also became a concern. The green home building is completed with automation systems and several other luxury appliances. Again, a proof of luxurious and sustainability combination is provided for a housing project. |
