Green Architecture of Caterpillar House by Feldman Architecture Posted: 26 Mar 2012 08:54 PM PDT Located on the hills of Santa Lucia Preserve, Feldman Architecture designed a green architecture building, named Caterpillar House. This sustainable home becomes the only LEED Platinum house on the central coast of California. Some sustainable features were applied for this building.
This sustainable architecture building is owned by a client who needs a environmentally-conscious modern ranch house. Some sustainable features and techniques were combined with the ranch concept, such as low and horizontal massing, open plan with connection between outdoor and indoor area, living area which is center informally in the kitchen. This sustainable house is completed with several sustainable features, such as rammed earth walls made from excavated earth from the site, that may act also as a thermal mass to maintain the temperature of the indoor area. As passive strategy is also used, natural ventilation and natural day lighting are also provided, supported by large overhang and sunshades that may provide additional protection from harsh sun light. Rainwater catchment system is used and the water is stored in 3 cisterns. To provide energy, alternative energy source from photovoltaic panels is used. With all of these features, this green architecture building may achieve LEED Platinum certification. This should be the first LEED Platinum custom home on the central California coast.
