Sustainable Architecture of Little Compton Retreat by ZeroEnergy Design Posted: 19 Dec 2011 08:23 PM PST Little Compton Retreat is another ZeroEnergy Design‘s sustainable architecture design. This beautiful private retreat is located in a beautiful community on the Rhode Island coast. It was designed to have very efficient energy performance, and claimed to need only 1/10th of the energy a conventional home requires for heating.
The sustainable architecture building has a sleek, simple, gable roofed structure, completed with two bedrooms located at either end of the house, and an open area in the center, used for living room, dining room, and kitchen. A loft area is located above the master bedroom, used as a playing space for children. The design may cover the client’s needs using efficient space and storage planning, despite of its modest footprint. The sustainable design adopted Passivehaus standard to provide high sustainability. Natural daylighting and natural heating are encouraged by generous amount of windows that have south facing, while the polished concrete floor acts as heat absorber and storage for winter use. The room position planning also provide the advantages of direct natural heating and day lighting for some rooms, especially the bedrooms, which may receive natural daylighting either in the morning and afternoon. North facing sliding doors connect the living room to the outdoor. Some eco friendly building materials were also used. High performance envelope were formed by R-40 walls, R-40 slab, R-70 roof, and exceptional air sealing. Low VOC materials were used to provide high quality indoor environment. A heat recovery ventilator maximize the heat produced by the home. By all of these features, 1/10th less energy than ordinary house may be achieved by this sustainable building. This eco friendly construction is hoped to receive certification in the near future. |
