Montrose Duplex, a Sustainable Architecture Building by WTARCH Posted: 15 Dec 2011 08:33 PM PST Montrose Duplex was a simple garage of the WTARCH‘s client, used for the electric vehicle garage and charging place. As they need a place for their house, they asked WTARCH to transform the garage into a sustainable architecture building of house, with some consideration of small lot available.
To realize the need of having sustainable green house, the architect added a new 484 sq ft loft unit above the garage building. This was built around and above the existing tree on the lot, providing a twisting structure that may maximize the sun light capture for natural lighting. A giant window at the top level support the natural lighting and view access. Some strategies were implemented to achieve high sustainability. Alternative energy used for this house is solar energy, provided by a series of solar panels at the roof. The eco friendly construction was also formed by using eco friendly building materials, non-toxic and renewable materials. Rainwater collection is provided by greenery at the part of the roof of the garage. This part may also keep the interior cool. There are also edible garden and composting pile available at the rear side, also there is a flower garden. The interior of this sustainable green building was designed simple and modern. White color is dominated, with combination of blonde wood flooring. The white color may enhance the effect of natural lighting, creating a larger garage feeling. A slim spiral staircase connects the floors and emulates the twisting shape of the building. |
