Solar Chamber, A Sustainable Architecture Building in Spain Posted: 08 Dec 2011 11:05 PM PST Solar Chamber Apartment is a sustainable architecture building was designed by Ruez Larrea. This sustainable design appears in a page of Le Corbusier's famous Unité d’Habitation. The building has unique shape, so it can utilize the natural heat and cold along the year, providing minimal carbon footprint. Some sustainable features are also available supporting the house on achieving sustainability.
This green architecture building is aimed to be inhabited by low-income families. That’s why low cost of construction process and low living cost should be considered. An energy efficient unit will be a great advantage for them. The curvy shape of this sustainable apartment building can encourage each unit of the apartment to get both southern sun and northern cooling breeze, thanks to the shallow floor plate. They are protected by double wall system and screen to avoid harsh sun light. When the screen is opened, it can form a canopy shape. In winter, glassed-shelled porches will allow the heat to enter the indoor and circulate it to all of the apartment units, through the ductwork in the ceiling. Radiant heat resulted by the building can be blocked or released depend on the needs. A central preconditioning air tunnel is used as ventilation for entire building. The air feed was set on the north side, in towers. By these, in summer, cooler air can flow to the building, so it is not needed to open windows. In winter, the air will be warmed by the earth and heating coil supported by hot water produced by the condensing boiler and solar thermal system. Heated air is also supplied by the air heated by the double wall. All of these will support this sustainable building in order to minimize the need of energy to control the room temperature.
This environmentally friendly building is completed with tucked away parking space, so there are spaces available for doing outdoor activities and planting some plants. The building's large openings provide a design marquee and communal areas. This can break the mass of the structure.
