Sustainable Design of Bamboo Residence by Group8 Posted: 10 Nov 2011 09:19 PM PST A beautiful and sustainable residential estate was designed by Group8. It was derived from a former industrial neighborhood in the Chandieu area in Geneva. The location will be developed to be a new large city block with public and private garden spaces. With some sustainable building strategies applied, this housing building will achieve high sustainability.
This eco friendly building has 6 floors, including a duplex apartment and 2 underground garage levels. It covers 46 apartments with north-east to south-west side exposure. It was designed to meet the Minergie standard (a Swiss sustainability brand). The unique feature is the using of some sliding green shades made from tinted glass, creating a beautiful mosaic pattern with 5 different green color variations. This concept was inspired by grass. Besides providing color for the facade, this also provides privacy covering for the apartments’ balconies. The site provides a slightly curvy shape. The attic's concave/convex facade of this eco construction forms a faceted volume made from aluminum plates, creating a good mixture with the sky color. Private gardens are available for the ground floor apartments. The sustainable building‘s construction is formed by thick concrete structure, to ensure the strength, also to provide great sound insulation for each apartment. To fulfill Minergie standard, some sustainable features were provided, such as floor to ceiling windows that allow natural ventilation and cross breezes within the apartments, good facade and roof insulation, “breathable” windows (double glazed with thermal breaks, with a third glass pane to allow airflow) supported by motorized shading, a double flow ventilation system, a geothermal heat pump, etc. The low temperature floor heating can be used as a cooling system (cold water produced by reversible heat pumps). All of these are supported by the application of passive design. Wooden materials were used for the flooring, and the cover of the terraces’ facades. The transformation of the area of this green building housing were done very complete, including the cleaning processes of industrial remediation (such as asbestos and hydrocarbons) to achieve comfortable residential area. |
