A Sustainable Building Design of Vancouver Airport Home Posted: 18 Aug 2011 07:53 PM PDT This is Vancouver Airport Home, a sustainable home designed by Rick Berry of Scott Edwards Architecture, and built by Hammer & Hand. This eco friendly construction takes place near Columbia River, Vancouver, Washington. This is an example of a northwest contemporary vernacular, owned by old couple who have lived there for 40 years.
The eco friendly building was built by recycling the old structure at the same site. The design, that should be simple but modern, was aimed to maximize the southern view to the river. Therefore, floor-to-ceiling windows were used to provide maximal view, and also to optimize natural day lighting. The roof was designed in cantilevered overhang style, which can provide shading and a refuge of rain, and other bad weather. The sustainability was really considered. The majority materials used were taken from local materials, especially the wooden and concrete materials. The design also incorporated the passive house concept. Materials for windows should be highly efficient, and another sustainable features were provided. For heating purposes, this eco construction is completed with 90%-efficient electric hot water heating and 90%-efficient gas radiant floor heating. The insulation is also provided. The others are the use of Energy Star appliances, energy efficient lights, and low-flow toilets. Heat recovery ventilation is also important. This sustainable single level house has a bedroom. The adjacent site is planned to be built by the children and grandchildren’s future homes. The old couple were plan to create an intergenerational family compound in that area, and the family has acquired the lots over the years. The location is near the airport, so that is named Airport Home. |
