Sustainable Building Design of Celo Residence Posted: 11 Aug 2011 10:08 PM PDT A sustainable home, Celo Residence, was designed by Samsel Architects and built by Sunspace Homes. Located near an organic farm at the South Toe River in Celo, North Carolina, the design should consider to reduce the visual impact on the surrounding hill sides, and another environment impact. Hence, several sustainable features to achieve high sustainability.
This 1,540 sq ft eco friendly construction was built on the down slope of the hill to minimize the visual impact of the home from the neighbors. The position also provides natural protection for the house from strong northern wind, as the wind will be intercepted be the hill. This eco building is covered by good insulation materials, such as Icynene spray-foam insulation, Dow XPS insulation under the slab, etc. The materials chosen for the windows and doors also became a consideration to minimize heat loss from these part. The choosing of black color for exterior may help the house to absorb the heat from the sun. Energy star appliances are also used. Sustainable building materials were used, such as the wooden materials, creating a classic but elegant effect for the interior. This house has a lot of high performance HURD glazed windows to provide good natural lighting. For the electricity, this house also can be supported by photovoltaic panels. Water was also considered. This sustainable house is supported by several products that may conserve water, such as the use of dual-flush toilets, water-efficient fixtures, drought-resistant plants. There is also a 3,750-gallon rainwater cistern for irrigation. Grey water recovery system may be installed further. By all of these sustainable features, the house may transform into an energy efficient house. It was proof by the achievement of an Honor Award from AIA Ashville and was featured in Fine Homebuilding and most recently inEcoHome Magazine with a Grand Award. It was also Energy Star certified, and received a 75 HERS. The projected total energy costs are expected to be less then USD 30 / month. |
