The Sustainable Design of The Hill Plain House Posted: 04 Aug 2011 06:38 PM PDT A sustainable design was made by Wolferidge Architects for a house. The house was created based on an Victorian-era agricultural structure platform, considering the integration with the landscape. The eco friendly construction was built in Victoria, Australia with very amazing landscape, and natural amphitheater condition provided by a ridge line that transverse the site. Some sustainable features are used, supported the position of the house, facing the north to maximize the sun control. The structure shape of this eco construction does not have big differences if it compares to the former platform, with a typical  of portal frame construction, incorporating  5no. 4m modules. The service core at the main level incorporates a wet entry at the south side, also contains  bathroom, kitchen, wc, laundry, hws, and wood-fired boiler. There is large sliders in the main living room, open to the north and south. These sliders may control the natural cross ventilation, also providing outdoor alternative condition if needed. Australianess senses of this sustainable home are provided by the natural materials used and the 70′s craftsmanship. Full height panels of windows are used with black painted compressed sheet over. The  custom blackbutt cladding at the ends of the house is completed with smaller windows. Large sliding screens protect the house from harsh summer’s sun. Some materials used is non-local, actually, but can provide better durability, such as the using of steel, concrete, concrete mansory, and eco building materials, like recycled timber. The interior is dark, drawing the eye to the beautiful external view. Some sustainable features, beside the cross ventilation, are used. 2 kW solar panel system is used, with generator backup. Woodfired hydronic heating system, supported by solar heated hot water are used for heating purposes. Of course good insulation is provided to control the temperature inside.
