Sustainable Design of Week’nder Prefab by Lazor Office Posted: 26 Jul 2011 10:36 PM PDT A sustainable prefab house called Week’nder was designed by Lazor Office. It was installed on Madeline Island, across Lake Superior. Some sustainable features and eco friendly building materials are used in this design to achieve maximum sustainability and to provide a good mixture with the environment surrounded. From the beginning, the making of this prefab house was done by considering sustainable development process. It was done off-site to save the waste and especially to reduce environmental effect caused by the construction process. The structure was built to be lifted from the ground, supported by several poles. This was done to maintain the existing site. This eco friendly construction was built using several sustainable materials, including, sustainably harvested wood framing, permeable gravel in the driveway, pine and plywood materials, etc. The using of these materials were done very carefully with the application of no-cut design, minimizing the waste, optimizing the materials’ uses and work. Some metal materials were also used to provide higher durability, such as steel for siding, galvanized steel roofing, etc. Landscaping were also a considered point where some irrigation-free plants were planted. Exterior part was finished with a rough-sawn, knotty, stained pine, in order to make the exterior not in a bad look along the time. This sustainable building was also completed by extensive glass area and operable windows to provide optimal day lighting and natural ventilation. With this natural ventilation, no air conditioner are needed. A stove fueled by woods can provide warmth for the house during winter. Another appliances were chosen from Energy Star appliances, including the toilets that can conserve water. ref
