Sustainable Building Design of a Musician’s House Posted: 14 Jul 2011 10:45 PM PDT A great, beautiful, unique, sustainable house was designed by Departure Design and Hammer & Hand for a couple of musicians, Connie and Morgan Curtis. This house is also a open music studio, where the owner can make music and share other arts, like painting, and videography. The construction of this house used a lot of eco friendly building materials. This sustainable design was included on the 2010 Build It Green! Home Tour.
This 1,400 sq ft eco friendly construction one master bedroom in the loft level, with a studio for music, media, and painting, integrated with the living space. A simple design creates a modern look for this house, still groovy and soulful. The unique roofing shape, just like an opened piano, creates a special characteristic for the house. There is a flexible space on the ground floor, near the garage, can be used as an accessory dwelling unit in the future. From the beginning of the construction until it was finished, the using of sustainable building materials became a big priority. This also can provide smaller budget, as they chose the reclaimed, reused, and recycled materials, beside the expensive new one. With good choices and consideration, they can provide beautiful appearance for the house, for example the old wood from the barn at the Oregon State Mental Hospital, used for the house’s clad. The floor is also from reclaimed wood. The choosing of the materials was also done by considering the durability. In some critical areas, long-lasting materials were used, such as fiber cement panel siding, a commercial grade metal roof, concrete paver roof deck, linseed oil-coated wood, and extruded aluminum exterior windows. By these, maintenance can be minimized to achieve maximum sustainability, supporting also by the using of high efficiency plumbing and lighting fixtures, on-demand gas water heater, and hydronic radiant floor heat. There are 3 big sustainable design notions used for this project :
This sustainable project become a great masterpiece and besides as a living and working place, this sustainable house can be used also to perform some entertainment, and maybe can provide some rental income too. |
