E-Cube, a DIY Eco House Building for Solar Decathlon Posted: 11 Jul 2011 08:42 PM PDT A team from Ghent University, Belgium has finished their design of a DIY eco friendly building for Solar Decathlon’s September competition. This is a sustainable design of E-Cube prefab house that can be built by the users theirselves, with several sustainable features and energy efficient features.
The team wants to propose a comfortable and affordable sustainable housing solution, with small budget. The eco construction was designed with 4 basic principles : modularity, affordability, flexibility, and efficiency. Energy efficiency becomes an important aspect here, both in the development process and when it is used. By these consideration, a DIY concept became a good solution, where people can built it by theirselves, anywhere, without the needs of any special tools. The two story sustainable construction features two bedrooms upstairs and a living room, dining room, and kitchen downstairs. The house is designed very flexible, so the user can modify it based on their needs, their time, and their budget. A standard pallet rack system forms the main structure, bold-less. It is then covered by fiber cement boards. The interior parts are not finished to reduce the cost. The sustainability is achieved by adopting the passive house principles and alternative energy sources, such as large solar system attached on the roof. They are also supported by the compact shape of the building that can minimize thermal energy loss through the building envelope. The materials needed can also be minimized. By the passive principles and phase-change materials, solar gain can be maximized. By all of these features, this sustainable design offers a great solution for people who need a flexible, affordable, and energy efficient house, that can be adopted to their own needs, budget, and the spcae availability. The modularity itself becomes a good point, besides its easy-to-install features.
