Sustainable Building Design of JustK House Posted: 30 Jun 2011 09:34 PM PDT A unique sustainable building design has been created by Martenson and Nagel Theissen Architecture, named JustK House. The sustainable house is located in Tubingen, Germany. Actually, this house is prefabricated wooden house, and designed very carefully to create flexibility and energy efficient. A lot of sustainable features are applied. The eco friendly construction was built in a 365 sq m site, located on a south-facing slope, facing the city and of Tübingen castle, as regulated by §34 of the Federal Building Code. It is used for a family with 4 children. It adopts passive design, just like the need of the client. Due to the small area, the house was built like a tower. By this shape, the house can provide far distance view. The eco house building‘s interior was designed very carefully to maximize the use and flexibilty of each room. Overlapping and functionality concepts were applied for the rooms. By these, materials can be minimized, and of course providing spaciousness feeling. To protect from wind and weather, the top and roof level of the house were clad in a "southwester hat" of roof sheeting. Just like to the exterior, they were shaped to form ridges at the edges, welded together to stand out from the water surface. A drainage edge on the eaves guides away the rainwater that falls on the roof cladding. The green home design evolved eco building materials, especially solid woods.  The house are formed from 136 elements, which were prefabricated, some by manual process, like using notches for carpentry and joinery, drill holes and grooves for installation of the electrics. To keep low the cost, the wooden surfaces in the common rooms have been designed in "refined shell construction." The surface of wooden elements were sanded down, bucked and soaped to preserve the light character of the wood. The unique feature is that the house can be split into two dwellings with separated entrances. One unit would measure 81 sq m and the other 57 sq m. In the warmer months of the year, this house can be extended by the 12 sq m balcony and the 23 sq m forecourt. It is very flexible to be changed if needed. The other sustainable feature is provided by the construction of the staggered main living space. It creates various room heights which zone the ground floor, providing different climate zones in winter. By this, cold outside air can be trapped in the lower entrance area, while kitchen and living room can be kept at moderate temperature. The warmest part will be the sitting room upstairs. This sustainable building design provides a good example on applying green building technology, especially on designing rooms, so they can control their temperature by their construction. ref
