The Environmental Friendly Design of 747 Wing House

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 10:31 PM PDT

Another amazing green construction project has been made by David Hertz Architects Inc.  The project evolves an old unused 747 air plane to be reused and recycled, especially its wings. Besides using sustainable materials, this project will also completed with several green products and technology. This unique house is located in the remote hills of Malibu, supported by beautiful views from the surrounding landscape.

The sustainable house is built in an area owned an eccentric designer, Tony Duquette, who built over 21 unique structures incorporating found objects from all over the world. After a fire disaster, David Hertz is doing a unique home design there, by utilizing parts of unused 747 plane. The idea is to design a house with a roof structure that would allow for a un-obstructed view of the mountain range and distant views.  Duquette also becomes his inspiration on designing this green construction.

The client is a woman who co-owns a Mercedes car dealership. She asked to have curvilinear/feminine shapes for the building. This can be described as a building with a floating curved roof. By this idea, an airplane wings can be utilized perfectly, and after several researches, retired 747′s wings are chosen to be reused, recycled and implemented in the green house design. Besides providing the needed shape, they also can provide a self supporting roof with minimal additional structural support needed.

The retired 747 was bought for USD 35,000 (the price of its principal raw material, aluminum), registered to FAA so it will not make a confusing view for the pilots who will fly overhead. This plane is than dissembled into some parts to be recycled and reused for a sustainable home building. The wings and tail stabilizer are then elevated to form roof for master bedroom. The 50-ft-long fuselage is used as roof for a detached art studio, while the remaining front portion of the fuselage and upper first class cabin deck are used as the roof of the Guest House. The lower half of the fuselage, which forms the cargo hold, will form the roof of the Animal Barn. The front part of the airplane will be formed as a meditation gazebo, with the cockpit windows as the skylight. The other parts will be also used to complement the sustainability of the house on using eco materials, such as a fire pit and water element constructed from the engine cowling.

Besides the using of sustainable materials, this sustainable house design is also completed with renewable energy, by using home solar panels. The eco friendly design are also including radiant heating system, natural ventilation, and high performance heat mirror glazing.

The recycle process of unused 747 parts as a construction materials is a good option on handling the unused materials that usually need large space. It becomes a good extreme example for all industry on doing sustainable reuse of “big aluminum can”, decreasing the area needed to handle these garbages, and also decreasing the cost of materials needed for industries. The eco friendly house itself will provide a beautiful views, and a unique feel of flying inside an aeroplane, supported by its hill location.
