Green House Design of Hudson Passive Project Posted: 28 Mar 2011 12:58 AM PDT Perhaps, several passive house projects have been built, but the Hudson Passive Project is the first passive house certified formally. This green house design was designed by Dennis Wedlick Architect LLC, built by Bill Stratton Building Company.  It was built in the Hudson Valley. This house is very special as its sustainability and its unique design, church-like interior design. The sustainable design was intended to achieve near zero energy consumption without the use of solar panels, wind turbines or other site energy systems. The barn-inspired struture was designed to heat and cool itself by utilize the nature.  All of these are achieved from the green building construction, without any additional  gadgets, such as photovoltaics, wind turbines, etc. It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and 1,650 square feet of space. The green house design can provide 90% energy use reduction associated with heating. The insulation is the most concerned subject, as it should be virtually air tight and heated primarily by the sun and from the people inside. Therefore, some insulations are used, such as 12 3/4″ EPS foam (R50) for the walls, 12 1/4″ Neopor SIPs (R53) for the roofs, and insulated concrete slab on layers of gravel, EPS, and XPS (R60) for the foundation. By these, a record of air thightness can be achieved at a score of 0.149 ACH at 50 Pascal. To maintain the fresh air inside, this green home building relies on a Zehnder ComfoAir heat recovery ventilator. It also minimizing the heat loss. Another Energy Star appliances, such as : two Mitsubishi Mr. Slim heat pumps (SEER 23 and 26) and three Cadet electronic baseboard heaters for coolong and heating purposes when needed. The green home design also involves wide opening at south side, by using glassed wall. This wall also provides modern feel to the house. Some windows are also provided to optimize the natural lighting and heating, vertical windows are by Serious Windows (725 Series) and the roof windows are by Fakro (FPL PreSelect). While the exterior adopted barn-like structure, the interior was designed very beautiful, adopting the high cathedral ceilings and gothic flair. A graceful bow-arch beams of southern pine frame an open, loft-like floor plan. The green design offers the core of architecture, not only technology dependences. The architect wants to proof that sustainability can be achieved not only by using some environmentally friendly products, but also by designing the right construction and choosing the right materials. ref 1 2
