Decatur’s Green House Design by Renewal Design Build Posted: 15 Mar 2011 12:49 AM PDT This is a major remodeling project done by Renewal Design Build for a house in Decatur, Georgia. The project provides  a new green house design for a 1930′s house which is old fashion already and lots of inefficient things. The sustainable remodeling was done, and achieved several awards, including a regional CotY award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and a Chrysalis Award for Best Green Remodeling Project. The old house was a 900 sq ft cottage with two bedrooms and one bathroom. The condition of the house was said out of date and not adequate for the needs of a modern  growing family. A total remodeling was chosen to create more modern, and sustainable home design. To provide more spaces for the family, expansions were also done to 2,100 sq ft. The finish sustainable design has Prairie-style design, including a modern kitchen, four bedrooms and three bathrooms, providing more pleasures for the inhabitants. Several environmentally friendly products and other sustainable features provide complete sustainable house design. The house now has SIP construction. Materials used are green products, such as low VOC paints, FSC-certified hardwood and bamboo flooring. Recycled glass countertops are also used. To provide more efficient energy and water, several sustainable products are used, such us geothermal system for heating and cooling.  Sustainable design for roof is applied by using deep roof overhangs to provide shade for windows, protect the house from sun’s over heating. shade for windows. High-efficiency doors and windows are also used to provide more energy efficient house. The house is also completed with tankless water heater and dual flush toilets. A 600-gallon cistern collects water through a hidden system in the exterior stone columns to provide water for the house’s needs. This sustainable home design can provide new look for the old house. Just like a fairy tale, where the beast turns to a handsome prince, this old house turns to a beautiful house, fulled with sustainability. ref
