SOL, Environmentally Friendly Homes by KRDB Posted: 26 Feb 2011 02:37 AM PST SOL is Solutions Oriented Living, a community of 40 modern environmentally friendly homes, designed by KRDB, built by Beck-Reit & Sons. It is located 3 miles from Austin’s downtown and achieved 5 star rating of Austin Energy Green Building Program, due to its sustainability. With modern and open-contemporary interior, this project provides affordable, and sustainable housings.
SOL project is created as one of the solutions for some problems, such as lack of affordable housing, the increasing of energy cost, etc. SOL becomes a community of green built homes that try to balance these issues, offering socially, economically, and environmentally responsible practices for the developers, the home buyers, and the communities. SOL project offers a lot of sustainable features as a community. As you can see in the picture above, they have a lot of green spaces, bike tracks, sub-grade bio filtration system for water requirement, and so on. A lot of open spaces provide gathering spaces for the inhabitants, creating good relationship for each other. The green homes have 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a courtyard area. Each home is designed with some environmentally friendly products involved, such as FSC-certified wood, geothermal HVAC, efficient appliances, and solar photovoltaics ranging in size from about 3-6 kW. With all of these sustainable features, the net zero energy concept can be achieved. They have 2×6 exterior wall construction, completed with spray-in Icynene insulation. They also have double-pane, aluminum-frame windows. Hardie-board cladding and durable metal roofing are also used. Each house is also completed with rain water collector and drought-tolerant vegetation. With all of these features, a green living community will be possible to achieved. All homes in SOL project also can be produced as prefabricated houses. This project can be a good sample to all green home builders to create a sustainable community. |
