An Environmentally Friendly Home in Tallahassee Posted: 22 Feb 2011 12:02 AM PST This sustainable house is owned by Mark and Linda Powell, located at 4512 Grove Park, Tallahassee. It was designed by Kevin Sossong. This environmentally friendly home achieved highest point of LEED Platinum home on January 2011 because of its sustainability. This craftsman bungalow style home looks very unique and beautiful with all of its sustainable features and its traditional design.
This 3,000 sq ft 2 level housing achieved a HERS index of 18, where a net-zero house has 0 HERS index. It means that the green construction is 82% more efficient than a standard home. It is completed by several environmentally friendly products, such as energy star appliances and some other energy efficient features, such as WaterFurnace geothermal heat pump. To provide green energy, this house is also completed with 5.2 W photovoltaic panels and a 50-gallon Progressive Tube solar hot water system with an 80-gallon conventional tank and recirculation loop. Several features are also chosen to be water efficient, such as water efficient fixtures, native landscape, pervious concrete and walks, and water efficient micro irrigation. This house is also completed with rainwater harvesting system to provide water. The green home design is also supported by the use of sustainable materials, such as sustainably harvested heart pine floors, FSC certified materials, non-VOC paint, etc. A GreenSmart Fireplace Extrordinair, SIP wall and roof panels are also provided. This home is a proof that sustainability can be mixed with traditional design, providing good mixture to its surroundings. |
