Lilyfield Housing, An Environmentally Friendly Housing in Australia Posted: 16 Feb 2011 12:43 AM PST If LEED is known in America, Australia has its own certification for green architecture, named Green Star. One of green construction that received 5 Green Star rating is an environmentally friendly housing called Lilyfield Housing. This sustainable project is the first project of its kind that received a Green Star residential rating on the East Coast of Australia. This sustainable dwellings were designed by HBO+EMTB and WatPac as the developer, took place in the 40 1950′s units’ site. . The green home design of the project sets a new standard for the public housing in Australia by its sustainability. It can provide proof that creating a sustainable home building is very realistic and achievable in terms of building function and use, project demographics and housing affordability. The project includes 24 units of one-bedroom unit, 58 units of two-bedroom unit, and 6 units of three-bedroom units, all of them are divided into 6 integrated blocks. As the location is close to the road, and on-street parking is available, there are no basement parking lots at this project, maximizing the land for the housing and associated open space. The close proximity to the public transport facilities also encourage the inhabitants to use public transport, which impact to the decreasing of air pollution and cost saving. Some sustainable features including several environmentally friendly products are provided in order to achieve highest level of sustainability. For the energy sector, the housing will be completed by photovoltaic panels for the electricity and gas boosted solar hot water systems to produce hot water. Controlling the energy for lighting is done by providing automatic sensor. Natural ventilation and natural lighting also become a priority. Special glazing is used for windows, providing good insulation. For water source, rainwater will be used, kept at a large rainwater tank. Some water efficient fixtures and fittings are also used. Recycling waste is also a big priority, including the waste from the construction to reduce landfilling. The project is also completed with bicycle storage facilities to support the using of sustainable transportation mode. A community garden has been included to support the community’s interaction and giving area for the inhabitants to grow their own food. A central courtyard for other outdoor activities is also provided. Native plantations which require minimal maintenance are included. This project provides a new vision that housing should not only achieve  affordability, but also adopt sustainable home design concepts to achieve sustainability. ref 1 2
