Green Home Building in Portland by THA Architecture, Inc. and GBD Architects Posted: 23 Jan 2011 07:22 PM PST Cyan Building is a a green home building created by THA Architecture, Inc. and GBD Architects. It is consist of sixteen stories, with several apartments. This building achieves LEED Gold certification, a proof of its sustainable design aspect. By its location and its green construction, this building offers complete facilities and access for the inhabitant, without donating bad impacts to the environment.
This 380,000 sq ft sustainable building was built by using green technology. It offers new concept of sustainable urban living by the 353 housing, consists of one and two-bedrooms, up to 550 sq ft apartments. The building is also completed by the parking lots for up to 290 cars, retail spaces, and a large private garden. The design is very dynamic, as a response to the dynamic surrounded environment. This building has unique “weave” patterned windows, creating a beautiful light patterns. This windows is the double casement type. By using a lot of windows, maximum natural day-lighting can be achieved, reducing the energy for lighting. Among each units, there are sliding partition which help to create a sense of openness while allowing for various spatial configurations. Other environmentally friendly products are used in this building, such as compact energy-efficient kitchen appliances, dual flush toilets, low-flow shower heads, etc. A lot of features are made from local materials, especially the green one, the recycled materials. Also the use of high emitted materials are prohibited. The CO2 emission is always monitored. This building has renewable energy system, such as photovoltaic panels, etc. It is also completed with high efficiency speed chiller and fan coil to manage the temperature. No CFC or HCFC refrigerant is used. The uses of high performance glazing and motion sensor lighting provide up to 20% energy saving, compared to the similar functional building. The green construction is also completed by a green roof, where some native and adaptive species and a series of parks are built. This eco-roof provides fresh water by capturing the rain water and filter it. This eco-roof also provides a natural environment for the building. There are still a lot of sustainable features offered. People can also have some outdoor activities in the open area of the building. Beside environmentally friendly housing, this building offers a great assimilation to the surroundings. |
