Sustainable House – Studio Design by Intexture Posted: 18 Jan 2011 12:34 AM PST Two Houston architects, Russell and Rame Hruska, the owner of Intexure Architects designed a sustainable building for their studio and their house. The live-work studio was designed with the application of several green home design aspects. The house-studio was built, utilizing a vacant urban lot littered with garbage.
The green home building separate the working area and the living area. The studio and the office are located in the ground floor, while the living area is upstairs. Some spaces were designed to have dual functions between working space and the private living space. An outdoor pavilion is also available for outdoor gathering, up to 12 persons. There are also playing areas completed with water features in the yard. This sustainable house-studio used possible local materials. The exterior is clad by Galvalume metal siding and concrete fiberboard that includes recycled materials. The sustainable home design is also supported by the passive house concept, where the building faces to the southern. A lot of glassed windows are used, to maximize the natural lighting and heating on winter, located in the southern part. The large overhangs are available on the south and west facades to protect the building from high summer sun. A 60 feet tall old oak tree also becomes a shading for the house.Operable windows also provide good ventilation for the indoor area. The other sustainable feature is the butterfly shape roof. This roof provides availability on collecting rainwater and direct the water to a pond in front of the house. A composting system is also available, supporting the vegetable garden. The plants for the landscape are chosen from drought tolerant plants and also have low maintenance. The interior was also done minimalist and used minimal materials. The first floor’s wooden ceiling became the upper floor’s floor, steel columns were left exposed. Double functions of some rooms are also provided, such as the dining space and the Architectural Materials Library are the same room, but different on the using hours. The sustainable design of this studio-home can provide good effects for the environment. This sustainable building also provides space for community gathering, creating good mixing to the environment. |
