Sustainable House Design of Lakewood House by Centerbrook Architects and Planners Posted: 15 Dec 2010 06:32 AM PST Another green home design was made by Centerbrook Architects and Planners for Lakewood House, located in Northeastern USA. Beside its beautiful surrounding environment, this house was also designed as an eco friendly living, completed with several sustainable features and green design concepts. This eco friendly living is a rustic house for a couple with three grown children and a large extended family. It is located in a pine forest, near a still lake. With this condition, the view of surroundings should be positive sides of the house, creating a consideration of making a good mixture between the house and the environment. This house was designed to follow the sun’s daily arc, opens to the southward toward the water. By this position, the inhabitant can enjoy the surrounding’s beauty optimally. The wooded location of the house shield the house from public view, but still provides a good view for the insider to the water. The house’s connected shed roofs are splaying to the south over window walls, providing deep overhangs, to create screen porches, keeping the house warm at winter, while cooling the house at summer. The first floor is set in such ways to flow seamlessly into the outdoors and onto a sitting porch through folding glass walls that open from side to side, providing a great living space by merging the exterior and the interior.  The main house is formed by combining two story hall that doubles as a grand entry. The walls are made from local stones. It has also a catwalk balcony leading to bedrooms and studio. The main hall connects the garage, service rooms, kitchen, and the living room. This house is also used some green products. Recyclable galvalume roof material is chosen, providing good reflection of sun light to reduce the heat, and providing clean feel and good durability. This house also has good water management, by using some runnels to channel the water through filtering basins below and onto the garden water feature before finally returning it to the lake. Some environmentally friendly products from wood materials are also used for sustainable flooring, ceiling, etc. The utilization of several green technology products make this house greener. This house uses closed-loop geothermal system and a super-efficient Russian wood stove as the heat sources. Hydronic radiant heat in the principal living areas is particularly effective in the high spaces, putting the heat at the living level where it is sensed, thus lowering the required water temperature and energy use. Multiple zones and the house's programmable thermostats also minimize energy. The heat is also collected naturally through the full height windows, stored it in the stone wall. To protect the house’s temperature, icynene insulation and tight wood-framed windows are used, minimizing the heat losses. Boiler fueled by bio-fuel as alternative energy source is used, minimizing the carbon footprint. Another environmentally friendly products are also used, such as high efficiency and sensor controlled lighting, very efficient induction cooktop unit for kitchen, etc. The using of local natural materials are also preferred, such as stones, woods, cork, rubber, etc. The unique aspect of the house is reflected in the exterior part, where some large tree trunks are arrayed in poetic patterns horizontally on the southern porch walls, to filter the daylight. They act as light screen, creating a unique look of the house. This beautiful house is very suitable for a retreat house, as it is supported by the beauty of the environment, including the lake where inhabitants can swim and play several water sports, also the forest that provide fresh air.
