Sustainable Home Design in Maine by Alex Scott Porter Design Posted: 12 Dec 2010 11:50 PM PST A retreat house was built in a coastal island of Maine. The minimalist condition of the island required some consideration of having a green home design, as some vital features needed for the inhabitants are not available, such as the lack of electricity, stores, road, water sources, etc. However, the location chosen for this eco friendly living (designed by Alex Scott Porter Design) provides a very exotic and beautiful view, creating a pleasurable weekend dwelling.
This house belongs to the designer’s father, Bruce Porter, a journalist and a retired professor from Columbia University. This house was completed with several environmentally friendly products and features, creating a sustainable home design and providing a good mixture to the environment. The ocean view can be seen very beautifully through the house, combined with tree populations there, creating a warm and exotic environment for relaxing time. This house was designed to have a lot of big glass windows to optimize the view and to provide natural lighting through the house. This windows and doors can be shuttered by the corrugated aluminum panels when in off-season. This material is also used to cover the entire exterior. Green interior design concepts are used for this house. For the wall, unfinished northeastern wood materials are used, creating an cozy and beautiful condition. Some cabinets was made from recycled plastic laminate. There are CB2 Lubi Daybeds, Arper Leaf chairs, and exposed CFL lights as complementary details that make the place seem worth the retreat. Natural ventilation system is also provided by configuring the clerestory windows. To have a perfect green home plans, some environmentally friendly products are also used. This house has house solar panels connected to large capacity batteries, providing green electricity. This house also has rainwater catching system and greywater system. Composting toilet is also used, to convert the human wastes into fertilizer. Some other energy efficient equipments, such as DC powered refrigerator, are also used. With this green home design, it can be proofed that to make a beautiful and cozy retreat house, green design concepts can be adopted to create a environmentally friendly house design. The using of local materials on the project helps to create a better carbon footprint, as efficiency on transporting materials. |
