Exotic Restaurant Design by DSA+s Posted: 31 Oct 2010 03:13 AM PDT This unique and exotic design was made by DSA+s for a Japanese Noodle Restaurant in Tanjung Duren Utara, Jakarta, Indonesia. The concept should be an outdoor restaurant and should be a temporary building that can be assembled and disassembled easily.
With all of those condition wanted by the restaurant owner, bamboo was chosen for the main material used to form the building. And a unique form of restaurant was described, to provide the protection function, umbrella was chosen as the inspiration of the form. Not just usual umbrella, but giant umbrellas are chosen to form the some shelters. These shelters are forming the entire building, creating an exotic environment, very natural, and very unique, as there will be a fusion between Japanese culture from the foods, and the traditional culture from the materials. The giant umbrella is made in different size and arranged in such way so each umbrella can be overlapped to each other, creating the roof. The drainage pipe is available in the middle of the structure to distribute the rain water from roof to the ground. This pipe is also covered by bamboo. The whole building can be said covered by bamboo. Bamboo is chosen as its flexibility of forming and the strength. The bamboos are tied each other by using black palm fiber (called “ijuk” in Indonesia). The giant umbrella is support by four bamboos, tied up with cross bamboo beams, creating a big column. The base is made from concrete, leveled to prevent flood. The roof is also formed from bamboo materials, assembled in coupling system to prevent water water dripping, and for protecting cracking which usually happened when bamboo is being exposed directly to the sun. The roof is made high, to provide good air circulation. The using of bamboo material can provide a better temperature in the building, as it is not keeping the heat as much as the concrete material. With this, the restaurant environment can be kept not to hot, not to cold. To keep the natural sense, the furniture are also made from wooden material, simple but still modern. photos : courtesy of DSA+s |
