Unique Design of Palmyra House by Studio Mumbai Posted: 01 Jun 2010 12:40 AM PDT A unique design of house was created by Studio Mumbai. This house is used for retreat house for the weekend. It is located at Nandgaon, Maharashtra, India, near the Arabian Sea. The house is located inside a coconut plantation, consist of two wooden louvered structures. Anchored to stone platforms, the structures overlook a network of wells and aqueducts that weave the site into an inhabitable whole. Some local materials were used, such as the trunks of the local Palmyra palm, local basalt for the boundary walls, plinths and paving, plaster finishes were pigmented with sand from the site, etc. Another materials were also used, such as seam aluminium for the roof, teakwood and India Patent Stone for the interior surface finishing, etc. The collaboration between the architect and the craftsmen created a unique combination between foreign and local design. The craftsmen detailed the exterior. A pool, located between the two buildings. provides a channel for swimming, with expansive views of the sea to the west and views into a dense foliage of palms to the east. Living room, master bedroom, and study room are located at the north side, while the kitchen, guest bedroom, and dining room are provided at the south side. The louvers provide passive cooling, while water for the house is harvested from three on-site wells, filtered and stored at the top of a water tower and fed by gravity to the house. These features make the house to be well adapted to the environment. |
Small House by Base Architecture Posted: 31 May 2010 09:28 PM PDT This small house was designed by Base Architecture. Base Architecture has some experiences on designing house in small lot. Some considerations should be taken to inhibit the building bulky and over shadowing to the neighboring properties. The design of this house combined the concept for some small area conditions, such as corner lots, flat lots, sloping lots (front to back) and (back to front) and also side falls. In the case of the Small street house being a site that slopes both from front to the back and across the site, it offers many opportunities to explore the spatial relationships proven across a mixture of levels and functions within the house whilst at the same time exploring the close relationships that exist on the adjoining lots. It was critically to open up this house to provide more access, especially to areas that are not usually explored, both visually and physically, such as roof top terrace, ow height garden areas within the house, that allow the house to breath. With such a small footprint, that is governed by the GFA requirements on the whole site it became apparent that the form of the building to allow this footprint and associated functions would express a character of its own as opposed to the traditional pitched tin roof. The form of the house, such as flat roofs, low pitched roofs, parapets, skillions and gables, also the use of some materials, such as face brick, weatherboard, fibre cement sheeting, metal cladding and rendered brickwork facades give the character of this house and support the purpose to the design a contemporary natural house. |
