Shou Sugi Ban, a Prefab Extension from Sustainable Building Materials Posted: 07 Feb 2012 05:59 PM PST Shou Sugi Ban addition is a prefab extension designed by BYTR Architects for a client who owns a 1950′s brick house in Netherlands. It was built from several sustainable building materials. Natural day lighting is considered, also the view.
The client needed an extension that can covers new kitchen, cellar and dining area. It gives accents for this traditional architectural house. The architect provided an eco construction in the form of prefab structure. It was built from eco friendly materials, such as wooden wall panels, recycled paper scrabs as insulation. Position of windows were considered in order to encourage the natural day lighting, supported by a skylight. The unique feature on this sustainable architecture building is the exterior cladding which is formed by charred timber, providing a completely maintenance-free facade without any sealers, coatings or finishes The prefab techniques were done to minimize wastes and other sources. After the cellar and foundations were cast in concrete, the eco friendly construction was then placed there in a working day. The total time needed was 8 weeks.
