Pan Gyo Complex, The Sustainable Housing Complex in South Korea Posted: 13 Oct 2011 09:18 PM PDT Pan Gyo Complex is a housing complex located in Pan Gyo, South Korea which won The Korea National Housing competition. It was designed by Mack Architect(s) as a sustainable community housing and a low density residential. Sustainable design and site planning were done to achieve minimal ecological footprint to the environment. This colorful eco friendly housing was built nestled near a lush green hilly region. It can cover 102 families and may blend seamlessly with the heavily planted area where it is located, thanks to the greenery which is  provided as private gardens which majority of the units have or as shared green area. The existing of these green areas may keep the temperature for being increased at summer. Each unit has natural ventilation from the front balcony. Stack ventilation system is also provided in the units’ stairways. Green roofs are also available, help to act as insulation, besides the energy efficient roof insulation installed. This green roof also help to filter the rainwater so the water can be stored for other purposes. For heating purpose, alternative energy used is from solar energy, through the radiant heating system. This sustainable housings‘ siteplan were designed very carefully. The tall buildings were placed to block the  cold northern winds. To maximize the natural day-lighting and solar energy capture, the south facing concept were applied to all units. This eco friendly buildings may provide affordable residential with minimal energy using, and low environmental footprint. The green area may provide a natural feeling for the inhabitants. The colorful finishing may provide dynamic living environment feeling. ref 1 2
