World’s First Sustainable Movable Apartment in Finland by NEAPO Posted: 17 Sep 2011 08:52 AM PDT NEAPO, a Finish architecture and construction firm that specialize its products on sustainable, safe and healthy residential buildings, created a unique and sustainable apartment building. This eco friendly building was designed mobile, can be moved easily to needed place. After construction phase, this sustainable building was moved to Turku, Finland, early of this month.
Actually, NEAPO has another business on ship building industry. That’s why to make a 485,017 pounds eco construction to be movable is not a big problem for them. This 3-story building was built and assembled in a shipyard warehouse. It utilized FIXCEL® steel sandwich structure, a triple seamed, steel material that was developed especially for use in modular construction. The use of this material provide a lightweight construction, but has very good strength and durability, including from earthquake. It is also 60% lower on CO2 emmission, compared with other industries. The structure itself can be recycled and reused completely. It will only need nearly 40% lower of energy consumption, compared to conventional steel materials. Those all proof that this construction is very eco friendly. This eco friendly building was build through prefabrication process. This process will allow the building construction to continue in poor weather. That means time can be faster, efficient, and minimal environmental disturbances. The process was also done to minimize the construction waste. The materials are chosen to provide healthy environment to the inhabitants. They should be fireproof, free from molds, non-corrosive, and low VOC. NEAPO also designed this sustainable building flexible, easy to be adjusted, just like their other products. With the use of renewable energy, wind power, this building will achieve maximum sustainability. In Turku, this prefab green housing building will be rented for some times. After that, it will be moved again to other place on the coast.
