Green Building Construction of Tim Palen Studio Posted: 15 Apr 2011 07:30 AM PDT These days, shipping containers have been used as main material for building a green construction, such as houses. Tim Palen Studio is one of buildings constructed from shipping container. It becomes the first permitted shipping container house in the Mojave Desert, near Joshua Tree, California. This prefab home was designed by ecotechdesign, combining the energy and production efficiencies of diverse pre-engineered building and energy systems that working together seamlessly to produce a smooth-running hybrid green home building.
The green home design involved 6 20 ft recycled shipping containers (5 for the living area, 1 for the studio). The prefabrication process was done in Los Angeles. They were designed so they can be erected and stacked 2 high in 15 minutes each. The sustainable housing is completed with one bedroom, one-and-a-half bathrooms, and a studio. It has 10,000 gal water storage tank, located at the back side of the building. This sustainable house building is also completed with several unique and environmentally friendly products. The sustainable concept itself based on efficient Prius engineering concept, wants to maximize efficiency and cost saving, also providing the flexibility of the design. The use of shipping container is also a way to recycle unused ISO containers. Natural lighting and ventilation also become a concern, with the existing of large windows and doors. The home is also completed with green living roof, consists of movable, bolt and add-on 4′x4′ modules, that are planted with with native desert plants and sedums to absorb heat, glare, dust and CO2. They are also using greywater irrigation. The green construction consists of an integrated steel framing system that gives streght and earthquake, fire, wind protection. Of course, it is made from recycled materials. Some claddings are also from this type material. The insulation systems are combined to create a building envelope that exceeds California energy code requirements by 50%. There is also a solar shading system, adjustable and perforated metal shade system, protecting the house from over sunheating. This panel also provides place to attach the solar system for electric and water heating. Another features, such as 22 in dimmable solar tube, Energy Star appliances, etc, are also provided to achieve maximum sustainability. The cost reduction is also an important concern for this green house building. The cost was $200 per sq ft, including foundation. It is very affordable for a sustainable building design like this house. |
