Green Home Plans of Helenowski Residence Posted: 02 Jan 2011 08:27 PM PST Helenowski Residence is one of a renovation project where some green home plans are involved. This house became one of some green homes that achieve highest point of LEED for Homes. With some environmentally friendly products used in this project, this green home design tries to reduce carbon footprint, at least at its region, Chicago.
This sustainable house was designed by Mariusz Bleszynski, AIA, and built by Square 1 Precision Lighting (led by owner Jacek Helenowski). The renovation project was done to remove the inefficient systems and facilities, and change them into more efficient and environmentally friendly products. The changes of insulation, electricity system, heating system, lighting, also some exteriors became the main subjects in this sustainable design renovation project. This project involves soy based insulation spray foam for the insulation. The using of recycled materials such as reclaimed Douglas Fir woods from nearby damaged fire building for the interior, cement from fly ash, reclaimed copper for the roof, etc, can make this project greener. This sustainable house design is also completed with the uses of several green products such as the using of axial wind turbine to produce electricity, completed with some solar panels. For the lighting, this house uses cold-cathode lighting which is more efficient than LED and does not contain mercury. In its roof, there is a green roof system, used for rain water collector. All paints and sealer are VOC-free. Triple-panel windows are used to provide better insulation and to maximize the natural lighting. In this purpose too, the roof was sloped in such way to control the sunlight and heat. This house also has motorized front blinds connected with thermostat to control the sunlight exposure through the house. With all of these sustainable features, this house could earn 119 out of 136 points of LEED for HOMES, and got Energy Star certification, with several other green certificates. What a great green project, isn’t it ? |
